The Indianapolis Colts are about to gain one of their top offensive weapons back after signing him to a nine-figure extension this offseason.

On Thursday, the team announced that wideout Alec Pierce was being taken off the physically unable to perform list.

This move will allow Pierce to get closer to playing after missing most of training camp due to his recovery from ankle surgery back in March.

In the offseason, Pierce signed a four-year, $114million extension to stay in Indianapolis, despite plenty of interest in free agency.

Pierce underwent an operation after previously receiving a platelet-rich injection of plasma in January.

After the injection didn't produce the necessary results, the University of Cincinnati product went under the knife.

Pierce's injury is sowing seeds of doubt when it comes to the expectations for the Colts' receiving corps.

In the offseason, teammate Michael Pittman was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Desperate for an extra option up field, the team signed veteran Keenan Allen last week.

Pierce, Allen and slot receiver Josh Downs are expected to be the top targets for quarterback Daniel Jones in a season where the Colts are not expected to make the playoffs out of the top-heavy AFC South.

Last season, Pierce was the only player on the Colts to haul in over 1,000 yards – making 47 catches for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns.
