Madrid, beware

By Dan Davis

This game might not be smooth sailing if the rest of this tournament is anything to go by. We've had a couple of seismic shocks already.

First, Botafogo beat Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain courtesy of a lethal breakaway and heroic defensive performance.

Then, just two days ago, Chelsea slipped to a surprise 3-1 defeat by Flamengo, imploding after Nicolas Jackson's red card.

The combination of a gruelling calendar and brutal heat has taken its toll on some of the European sides competing at the Club World Cup.

Madrid certainly looked miles off their best against Al-Hilal last time out. Will Pachuca be the next underdog to get the better of Goliath?

Have your say!

By Dan Davis

I'm really keen to get your thoughts on the Club World Cup so far.

Have you enjoyed it? Has it lived up to all the hype?

Is all of this an exercise in how to work players to breaking point?

I know exactly what Gianni Infantino thinks. After all, this is his brainchild, for better or for worse. He seems delighted.

'Could be pretty sluggish'

Charlotte has been a sea of white all day, with Madrid fans queuing up since the early hours.
The cab driver told us the cheapest ticket on the resale market today is around $300 but I do worry for the fans who have forked out today.
It is scorching, with an extreme heat wave dubbed as the 'heat dome' hitting most of the country in the coming days.
With this an afternoon kick-off, expect plenty of cooling breaks and a game that could be pretty sluggish.

Pachuca team news

It's just the one change for the Mexican side tonight.

Pedro Pedraza has dropped to the bench while Alan Bautista starts.

Up top is a bit of a Premier League cult hero: Salomon Rondon.

Reporting for duty

The sun is shining in Charlotte and it's a perfect day for football.

We'll ignore the fact that the Club World Cup is coming right off the back of an already ludicrously hectic season.

It all feels a bit too much like that classic That Mitchell and Webb Look 'All The Football' sketch. You know the one.

Where's Mbappe?

By Dan Davis

No, this isn't a Where's Wally? rip-off.

Well, Kylian Mbappe is feeling better after suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis, which saw him admitted to hospital.

He was discharged on Thursday and returned to training at Madrid's training camp in Palm Beach, Miami.

This game has come around too soon, but the forward is expected to be fit enough to return against Red Bull Salzburg on Friday.

This is the home of NFL side Carolina Panthers and MLS outfit Charlotte FC, managed by former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

As is the case with every Club World Cup match, if you want to watch along with us, you can create a DAZN account and watch for free.

Kick-off is at 8pm BST.

Last time out

By Dan Davis

It's fair to say Xabi Alonso didn't quite hit the ground running like we all expected him to. In truth, Madrid were poor against Al-Hilal.

Gonzalo Garcia, who is up top again for Los Blancos tonight, scored the opener but Ruben Neves - yes, him - got the equaliser.

Federico Valverde then saw a late spot kick saved.

Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior were both given plenty of minutes in that match, as did Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen.

Pachuca, meanwhile, lost 2-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in their opener.

Real Madrid team news

By Dan Davis

As we mentioned earlier, Trent Alexander-Arnold starts again at right back, while recent signing Dean Huijsen gets the nod at centre back.

Rodrygo, who has been linked with a move away this summer, has dropped down to the bench with Arda Guler in from the off.

It's a strong-looking bench. Just have a look at that.

Xabi Alonso isn't messing around.

Evening!

By Dan Davis

Hello, all. Welcome along to Mail Sport's live coverage as Real Madrid take on CF Pachuca. Can they pick up their first Club World Cup win?

All eyes will be on Trent Alexander-Arnold after he made his debut last time out in the 1-1 draw with Saudi side Al-Hilal.

He keeps his spot in the side, but Kylian Mbappe is still ruled out.

Let's bring you the full Madrid team news, shall we?
