A former Premier League mainstay has hung up his gloves after almost two decades as a professional player.

The 37-year-old made 222 appearances in England's top flight for Newcastle and Norwich City, keeping 51 clean sheets and conceding 371 goals.

His form at club level led to him earning 15 caps for the Netherlands and he famously helped them through a World Cup penalty shoot-out against Costa Rica in 2014 after coming on as a substitute for Jasper Cillessen, saving two spot-kicks.

The star is none other than Tim Krul, who has been without a club since leaving Luton Town at the end of the season.

Krul, who made the bulk of his Premier League outings in the mid-2010s with Newcastle, shares the record for the most saves in a Premier League game with David de Gea, after achieving that against Tottenham in November 2013. De Gea later matched it in 2017.

Sharing an array of pictures from across his career, he wrote on Instagram: 'As I hang up my gloves after 20 incredible years as a professional football player, I want to take a moment to reflect on my journey.

'From joining Newcastle as a 17 year old boy, to representing Holland on the international stage.

'I have truly lived the dream I had as a young boy every match, every training session, and every rollercoaster moment has shaped me into who I am today.

'Thank you to the clubs, coaches, team mates my beautiful family, and most importantly you fans for your support throughout my career.

'I am excited for the next chapter and will always cherish the memories made on the pitch. Here’s to new adventures off the pitch!'
