Team Europe will take a 5.5-2.5 lead into the second day of the Ryder Cup after a dramatic end to the afternoon fourballs.

Luke Donald's team dominated the foursomes in the morning to take a 3-1 lead into the afternoon.

Then they claimed a 2.5-1.5 victory in the fourballs after Sam Burns and Rory McIlroy missed their putts to claim a full point, meaning they had to settle for a half each.

Earlier in the day, Europe had dominated the foursomes to win the first session 3-1 although they were denied a memorable whitewash.

In a display of utter dominance, Donald's side humiliated the home team as United States president Donald Trump watched on.

Firstly, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas were sent out first on a mission to hype the New York crowd, but they were crushed 4&3 by Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

They dominated the morning foursomes to claim a 3-1 victory, with Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick among the stars who shone

And in a dramatic afternoon session, Europe came out on top 2.5-1.5 in the fourballs

Then there was McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, who beat Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg then blazed to a 5&3 win against World Number One Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley.

The only morning consolation for the hosts was a 2 UP victory by Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay against Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre to recover the overall score to 3-1.

In the afternoon, Cam Young and Justin Thomas gave the United States hope as they dispatched Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard 6&5 to recover the day's score to 3-2.

But Team Europe restored a more comfortable advantage of 4-2 as Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka beat Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun 3&2.

Then, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose finished the day 1UP against Ben Griffin and Bryson DeChambeau, with Rose nailing his birdie putt to give Team Europe a 5-2 advantage.

Finally, McIlroy and Shane Lowry went right down to the wire against Sam Burns and Cantlay as the pressure built. But that one finished level as neither side could claim the victory.
