The Super League semi-final between Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards appears to be in doubt thanks to an explosive row over ticket allocations.
In a stunning statement that has rocked the world of rugby league the Warriors this morning claimed that their near neighbours ‘do not intend to fulfil’ Friday’s showdown at the Brick Stadium.
They say that Leopards’ outspoken chairman Derek Beaumont informed them by writing on Tuesday at 10.37pm of his club’s position.
Wigan point out that they offered Leigh 4,600 unreserved of 5,400 reserved seats for the match, which will see the winners progress to Old Trafford for the Grand Final.
They also say that both figures are well above the 10 per cent of capacity minimum requirement at the 25,133-capacity venue and close to double the threshold.
The statement added: ‘While we regret that Leigh Leopards found this arrangement unacceptable, our club is legally, and professionally, bound to comply with the directions of our Ground Safety Officer and the conditions of our Ground Safety Certificate.
