Carrick hails Baleba arrival

Michael Carrick has welcomed the arrival of midfielder Carlos Baleba and says Manchester United’s new £70million signing could possibly make his debut before the international break next month.

Baleba has been out of action with an ankle injury he suffered in pre-season for Brighton, and Carrick confirmed that the 22-year-old Cameroon international will be out for ‘a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks’.

‘He's got a little ankle issue,’ said Carrick. ‘So, maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks, we'll see. But we knew that before, so it's no major issue. It’ll be great to have him back when we can.’

Asked if Baleba or Amad Diallo, who missed the opening-day defeat to Hull with an injury sustained in training, might be fit before the three-week break, Carrick added: ‘It's obviously new, you know, having the break to deal with. But we'll wait and see. We're hopeful, but I don't want to put any deadlines on it just yet. Amad won't be involved this week. He'll be out for a little bit longer.'

Carrick had a more positive update on Mason Mount who hasn’t featured since suffering a foot injury against Paris Saint Germain midway through pre-season.

‘Mason's back around the group, which is great,’ said Carrick. ‘He trained this week, so that's a real positive for us. We’ve got a good squad, you know, and we could pick a variety of combinations within the team. Certainly the boys are massively in contention.
