Such a long way to go - but here's the current table following the first round of games, courtesy of our friends at TNT Sports.

It makes good reading for United and their fans!

Sabah fall short

As for Sabah... their defence was leaky, but they showed a positive approach, pressing high, and did have their chances. On another day, they take them.

They will most likely go out in the league phase, but don't rule them out. They have games against the likes of Slavia Prague and Viking to come - but also Arsenal, Barcelona and Napoli. It will be quite the experience for them.

A team on the up with a great story.

Next up for United

Three games to go for United before the international break, then - and you don't need me to tell you how big Sunday's game is.

They will be back at Old Trafford for the derby against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, and it promises to be a classic - you can follow it all on Daily Mail Sport.

After that, they will take on Brighton in the Carabao Cup in midweek, before ending the first section of the season away to Fulham.

Carrick: 'We have played some really good football'

Michael Carrick, Man United manager, TNT Sports:

It's nice to have a clean sheet and win the game. Some of our attacking play was fantastic - they were a really tough team to play against. It wasn't always comfortable.

Kobbie Mainoo is a fantastic player, it's obvious to see, playing a bit deeper really. He wants to learn and improve and listen and he expresses himself on the pitch.

We have good players, which helps. We're seeing connections and combinations and we have the technical ability for the boys to take the ball in the middle of the pitch.

We have played some good football through the middle of the pitch. A lot of it is on wavelength and understanding.

CHRIS WHEELER at Old Trafford

My colleague Chris Wheeler has been on hand to pen his take on tonight.

I think he sums it up quite well. A routine win, some standout individual performances - but tougher tests to come.

  • huacho: If we miss out on qualification for the knockout games on goal difference, we will regret this lethargic second half performance....should have been going for goals....and more goals.
  • Brendan123: We are back baby! Sabah sit down - this is a precession! Based on this performance I think there will be plenty of teams taking notice! Carrick u legend!

It's been a while...

Tonight marked United's first win in the Champions League since October 24, 2023, when they beat Copenhagen 1-0 at Old Trafford.

That was 1,052 days ago. Wow.

Sesko: 'It was good preparation'

Benjamin Sesko, Man United forward, TNT Sports:

It was perfect for everyone, especially for our fans. It means a lot to them when they see so many goals. It was good for us to prepare for the upcoming games.

I saw the goalkeeper rushing out and I took the ball away from him to make it a little bit easier.

It is important that everyone can score goals. I hope for many games with that.

The confidence boost is big. We now need to recover for the derby.

United win on Champions League return

A routine win for United, then. It didn't always look like it would be.

Sabah were very suspect defensively and they won't be too happy to watch the goals back. But this was a historic night for them - it will be interesting to see how they go in the rest of the competition. Mickels should have scored at 1-0, for example.

As for United - bigger challenges await. Today wasn't actually that great in terms of the way they played, but it's not always easy against lesser teams.

But they are up and running.

FULL-TIME: Man United 4-0 Sabah

Just the three minutes added on. The stadium is starting to empty now, with fans looking to make their ways home on the back of a comfortable win.

OH! Mbina hasa great chance now! Mickels crosses, and it's a powerful header, actually. I thought Lammens had saved it - but it's hit the top of the bar!

Unfortunately for them, that's as good a it gets. The full-time whistle is blown.

Man United 4-0 Sabah

Cor - it's another chance for Mickels, as his latest effort flies across goal. He's been a bright spark tonight.

Amass wins a free kick on the left. United opt to keep the ball.

They will now be keen to see out these final few minutes.
