Football player suffers 'life-altering' injuries and needs emergency surgery after being punched in groin during CFL game

CFL player Liam Talbot reportedly suffered 'life-altering' injuries after being sucker punched in the groin in a 'shameful... disgusting' incident.

Talbot is a running back for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League and on Saturday they took on the BC Lions.

Grainy footage of the game, posted to social media, appears to show Talbot being punched in the groin twice by Lions defensive back Josh Hagerty. 

He finished the game, according to 3DownNation, but Talbot's condition worsened to the point that he required emergency surgery that is expected to end his CFL season. The injuries are said to be potentially 'life-altering.'

'It's shameful, disgusting and there's no place for that in our sport,' Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia told the Journal de Quebec. 

'In 30 years of experience in football, I have never seen anything like it... it's disgraceful,' he continued. 'We are angry.'

The CFL announced on Thursday that Hagerty has been given a two-game suspension 'for striking Montreal running back Liam Talbot.'

'This is not football. There need to be consequences for this kind of unacceptable play that puts players' safety at risk,' Alouettes fullback Marco Dubois wrote on social media.

'Punch in the nuts, I've never seen anything like that from an adult in a professional football game,' lineman Cyrille Hogan-Saindon added.

The precise details of Talbot's surgery have not been confirmed but he is on the Montreal Alouettes injury list for six games. The injury report lists him as having a groin issue.
