Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish frustrated with new boss Pierre Sage for dropping Jaydee Canvot just four games into the season

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is understood to have been frustrated by Pierre Sage’s choice to drop Jaydee Canvot for Saturday’s defeat against Ipswich Town.

Sage described the decision to leave the defender out of the squad as a ‘sporting’ one, following a poor display against Fulham the previous weekend and a disappointing week in training.

But Daily Mail Sport understands his stern treatment of Canvot, a young value-appreciating asset, has gone down badly in the boardroom.

The 20-year-old became a regular starter in the second half of last season after Marc Guehi joined Manchester City and had started Palace’s first three Premier League games under new boss Sage.

The French coach was previously praised for his hardline approach towards understudies Dwight McNeil and Evann Guessand, leaving them out against Fulham to provoke a response.

However, Canvot is viewed internally as a key part of the project and his omission has therefore been viewed more negatively.

Palace have suffered a disappointing start to the season, losing three of their opening four Premier League matches, including Saturday’s 3-2 defeat against newly promoted Ipswich.

Sage has not yet had his best team to choose from, with Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta among those sidelined.

Their defence is unsettled, though, conceding 11 goals in their first four league games - a worse rate than Sheffield United managed during their record-breaking 2023-24 campaign, when they shipped 104 goals.

Sage replaced Oliver Glasner, who won the FA Cup and Conference League while at Selhurst Park.

The Frenchman arrived from Lens, where he won the French Cup and guided the club to a second-place finish in Ligue 1.
