College football coaches agree to change rules mid-game... and head coach 'didn't even know that was legal'

The college football season has barely been back a week, but already it's producing some unbelievable scenes out on the field. 

The clash between Michigan and Western Michigan stole the headlines on Saturday, after a controversial Hail Mary touchdown brought an end to their game in Ann Arbor.

However, elsewhere on the night, there were equally wild scenes over in Tempe during Arizona State's blowout 70-7 victory over Morgan State.

The hosts had raced into their 63 point lead after just three quarters and, as a result, both teams agreed to shrink the fourth quarter to just 10 minutes.

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said: 'I've never been part of a game like that. 

'I didn't even know that was legal, but I learned something today. When he asked to shorten it, I said: 'Whatever he wants, we'll do''.

He revealed that his Morgan State counterpart, head coach Damon Wilson, had asked officials to shorten the fourth, before Dillingham swiftly agreed.

The shortened quarter saw neither side score, leaving the score line at 70-7. The hosts had scored 28 points, 21 points and 21 points in the opening three quarters.

The Sun Devils' victory was led by Kentucky transfer quarterback Cutter Boley, who threw for 387 yards and six touchdowns during his debut for Arizona State.

Wide receiver Reed Harris, meanwhile, produced six receptions for 137 yards, scoring two touchdowns along the way. 

The shortened fourth quarter wasn't the biggest story of the night, however, with the Michigan-Western Michigan clash causing a major stir on social media. 

Western Michigan appeared to have pulled off a seismic upset against the Wolverines when they batted down a Hail Mary as time expired.

But officials inexplicably put one second back on the clock, giving Michigan another attempt to win the game. And they did just that, with Bryce Underwood finding JJ Buchanan after launching the ball 47 yards as the clock struck zero for a second time.

It snatched a 13-12 win and sparked wild scenes at the Big House in Ann Arbor, but all the noise since has been about the officials' ruling on the previous play.
