The troubled 25-year-old son of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was arrested with several dangerous illegal drugs earlier this summer, according to Santa Monica Police.

As first revealed by The California Post on Wednesday, an officer witnessed Daniel Leonard and another man 'walking with an inflated balloon and a large cylindrical container believed to be a nitrous oxide tank' in the early morning hours of July 7.

'As the officer approached, one man attempted to conceal the balloon behind him before dropping it to the ground,' the SMPD rep told the Post. 'The second man appeared to conceal the container at his side. Officers detained both men and confirmed the container was a nitrous oxide tank.'

The pair was arrested for possessing nitrous with the intent to inhale before Daniel was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine and sedatives/benzodiazepines. In total, he was charged with four misdemeanors for possession of nitrous oxide, a substance containing nitrous oxide, MDMA, alprazolam and dextroamphetamine.

He is due back in court in LA County on October 12, according to the Post.

The Daily Mail has submitted a records request with the SMPD for further information. Daniel did not immediately respond to The Daily Mail's requests for comment on Wednesday night.

This marks the latest arrest for the son of Ray Leonard, a former five-division world champion and Olympic gold medalist, who served as America's most popular boxer in the immediate aftermath of Muhammad Ali's retirement.

In May, TMZ reported Daniel was arrested for violating a restraining order at the family's home, although that protective order was later dropped.

According to the Post, it was a 'violent' incident involving Daniel and Ray that led the father to file a protective order against his son.

The Post later produced Ray's restraining order request in which he describes his youngest son as an addict and thief, who steals 'every day.' In a handwritten declaration, Sugar Ray wrote: 'He has overdosed 4 times. They had to bring him back to life 2 times at the hospital!

'He has stolen extreme amounts of money valuable items! He [illegible] steals every day for years! My son Daniel Leonard has been a drug addict for 7 or 8 years at least. His behavior has gotten worse over the years!'

'I love my son but he has become a danger not only [to] himself but to his family! My wife is extremely afraid along with [my] daughter Camille!' Sugar Ray continued. 'His behavior has gotten worse every day. We haven't had a day of peace in 9 years which is the reality of his addiction! Scared for my family!'

More recently, Daniel (R) was pictured alongside the family - and Magic Johnson - last August

Daniel is the youngest son of Sugar Ray Leonard and his second wife Bernadette Robi, and his third son overall.

Sugar Ray, now 70, had his first son - Ray Jr - with his first wife Juanita Wilkinson in 1973, before adding a daughter - Camille - with Bernadette.

In February of last year, Daniel's mother Bernadette posted a cryptic caption on Instagram alongside a photograph of Sugar Ray and Daniel - her husband and son.

A photo showed the pair standing together on a beach with Sugar Ray's arm around Daniel's shoulder, and the caption read: 'Happy Valentine's to my hearts!!! Love you both beyond and we will get through this faze (sic)!'
