Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Darnold, who led Mike Macdonald's team to victory at Super Bowl LX, was hurt during Seattle's season-opening win over the New England Patriots.
Now the Seahawks have confirmed that Darnold's glute injury will keep him out of Week 2, with Drew Lock set to deputize under center.
But the Seahawks have no plans to put Darnold on injured reserve - which would rule him out of at least four games - or sign another quarterback.
Jalen Milroe, the ex-Alabama star drafted by the Seahawks in 2025, will serve as backup to Lock against the Cardinals.
'Drew has known he's going to start here for a while,' head coach Macdonald said on Tuesday. 'So I'm looking forward to seeing him practice today, just like I am Sam when he's playing.'
It was originally thought that Darnold had suffered a hip injury when he was sacked on the fifth play of the Seahawks' first drive of the season.
But earlier this week, a team spokesperson said the quarterback had suffered a 'very unique, soft-tissue injury' that would sideline him for the 'short term.' But there was 'no firm timeline.'
Against New England at Lumen Field, Darnold was sacked by Dre'Mont Jones while trying to scramble away from pressure.
The quarterback limped over to the sideline and then, after a visit to the medical tent, he was led toward the locker room.
Darnold headed for X-rays before being ruled out of the game during the second quarter, with Lock leading the Seahawks to a 13-10 comeback win.
