There's no denying Alexander-Arnold is an excellent footballer, and probably should have been recalled to the fray sooner, but claiming the defender has had a 'good start to the season' at the Bernabeu is a little strange.

In Madrid this season, he's only started three out of seven matches - with Jose Mourinho favouring new summer signing Denzel Dumfries at right-back. And in that time, he's only managed one assist.

I'm pleased to see Alexander-Arnold back in an England shirt. But I'd be lying if I said Tuchel's comments haven't taken me by surprise...

Thomas Tuchel's main focus at the World Cup was selecting a group of physical and hard-working players he trusted to control games, especially in midfield.

Now, he appears to have steered away from that model ever so slightly. Yes, Declan Rice and Elliott Anderson still appear to be manning the double pivot, but having Cole Palmer back challenging for a No 10 spot is only going to help England create more in attacking areas.

The biggest creativity change is at right-back. Recalling Trent Alexander-Arnold is a huge statement, given his ability to create from deep.

For those wondering where Reece James is, there is a chance he is injured after missing Chelsea training yesterday. Xabi Alonso refused to confirm he is out during his press conference though...

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been handed a surprise recall as well as Cole Palmer, but there is still no place for Phil Foden despite Man City's promising start to the season.

Morgan Gibbs-White will also feel hard done by after missing out again, while Alex Scott and Myles Lewis-Skelly make the cut in midfield.

Ollie Watkins' move to Saudi Arabia appears not to have done him any favours as in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin comes in as a deputy to Harry Kane.

Tuchel surprisingly omitted a few high-profile players from his 26-man World Cup squad in the summer, with Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold topping that list.

With four games to sink his teeth into, Tuchel would be wise to use the October break as an opportunity to test out new ideas and give those who didn't go to the World Cup - and perhaps should have - the chance to shine.

The upcoming Nations League campaign represents a new dawn for Tuchel in many ways. Given how England crumbled against Argentina, changes are needed - but how much he tinkers with the tried and tested remains to be seen.
